With marketers engaging with consumers across multiple channels, messages must be tailored to resonate with audiences on email and social sites.

But research suggests a look at simple demographics does not give a clear indication of how audiences differ. Engagement in these channels is personal and depends more on psychographic characteristics.

According to ExactTarget’s “Subscribers, Fans and Followers” report, there is little cannibalization among the three channels—instead, there is significant overlap.

Most internet users studied in April 2010 engaged with brands only via marketing emails, but nearly a third subscribed to emails in addition to being fans of brands on Facebook.

The vast majority of social media fans or followers were also email subscribers.

“Consumers don’t silo their engagement with brands to a single channel, instead they tend to ‘layer’ marketing channels on top of one another to meet their different objectives,” said Morgan Stewart, principal, ExactTarget’s research and education group, in a statement.

Overall, 95% of daily email users subscribed to marketing messages.

Two-thirds of daily Facebook users were brand fans, and about four in 10 daily Twitter users followed a company or brand, showing that email is still the preferred channel for brand engagement even among heavy users of social media sites.

Users also engage with a greater number of brands via email.

But analyzed psychographically, ExactTarget found different patterns of engagement. Email appeals to just about everybody.

Groups that had the greatest focus on becoming fans of brands on Facebook tended to be younger, but also shared a motivation for entertainment and the ability to publicly show support for brands.

The report suggests using Facebook for both informative and entertaining communications would be most effective.

Twitter appeals most to consumers who want to feel up to date and in the know, suggesting information about new products and services or other brand initiatives would be of interest.

We, experts and professionals of Statistics are usually attacked with insinuations about our work.

Beyond the famous phrase “if we have two chickens, I eat two and you none“, Statistics says that, on average, we eat one each. But people endlessly misunderstood this branch of science offers near-endless possibilities of development and implementation.

A cross-science

There are many definitions of what the statistics, but we will keep the following in its brevity and conciseness:

Statistics studies the scientific methods for collecting, organizing, summarizing and analyzing data and to draw valid conclusions and make reasonable decisions based on this analysis in the search for explanation of terms such regular random phenomena.

Nowadays, Statistics has become not only a theoretical tool that abounded in the literature, but in a real tool for use in many facets of life.

Every day take more importance to the implementation of statistical methodologies in managing projects and budgets. For example, management of budgets in health and social security today is inconceivable without the use of able to collect the vast amount of information continuously, and their subsequent treatment by powerful computer.

Similarly, statistical analysis enables an optimum X-ray vision of demographic and social situation of a country, and also predict the evolutionary behavior of populations. Because of this, you can adjust more adequately the general budgets of a country, beyond the recent decisions of politicians.

Thus, Statistics is used by several professionals in fields as diverse as Medicine, Architecture, Business and Social Research, the Meteorology, Biology and so on.

Quantitative Methods versus Qualitative Methods

Traditionally, there have been two working concepts or philosophies regarding the methodologies to carry on the research process. The qualitative view, allowed to bypass the collection and analysis purely quantitative, focusing on those values measurable objectives through qualitative (observation, interview, validation, etc.)

However, today professionals combine both methods, classify this mixture as “quali-quanti methodology”, using statistical requirements to the traditional techniques of qualitative research.

The lure of Statistics is that, in its versatility. Typically, the research process have been turning into flexible over the past decades, thanks in part to technological advances that have given power to the processing of information.

From Laplace to Tukey

Originally, statistics was a new modality in mathematical science, and something designed primarily to counts, gambling, taxonomy and the number of suicides.

From the earliest contributors to the cause, such as Bernoulli, Pearson, Gauss, Bayes and De Moivre to the geniuses of the twentieth century as Yule, Pearson, Fisher, Sneadecor or Cochran, Statistics has gained weight between scientific activity and between activity human, so that a world today would be inconceivable without the application of statistics.

Game Theory, the Law of Large Numbers, Time Series Analysis, Design Samples, the balance of probabilities, Quality Control, the correlation test Chi-square, ANOVA tests are nowadays immense utility and application in many professional fields.

Statistics and 2.0 world

Furthermore, Statistics and the exponential evolution of new technologies go hand in hand, not only by the tremendous support that software development in recent years has enabled the statistical analysis are conducted quickly and inexpensively (operationally speaking ), but Statistics is in itself a tool of analysis 2.0.

For some time, social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Tuenti, etc., are fed by a continuous statistical analysis in the development of their internal applications (games, chats, tips, etc.) and in the allocation of advertising, among other utilities.

Social networks are after all a huge system of nodes where the Operational Research (a branch of mathematics and statistics) will have much to say in the near future. Who knows, maybe Dijkstra algorithm would be able to discover that virtual social relations are based on relationships based on Euclidean similarities.

The use of social networks and Web 2.0 increases by 82% in one year

According to Nielsen figures for December, the time spent on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter increased 82% during 2009. Facebook was the number one social network with 206.9 million unique visitors in that month, equivalent to 67% of the users of social media worldwide.

According to research, in December visitors spent an average of 5h 35min social networking sites, compared with 3h 4min that happened during the same period last year. The study is based on Web surfing habits in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Australians spend more time on social networks

The Australians are the ones who spent more time on social networking sites, with an average of 6h 52min per month. Followed by USA and the UK, where users spend little more than six hours per month in this type of media. Although Japan is second in number of users of social media, users in this country spend only half of 2h 50min per month in social networks and blogs, according to statistics.

Strong growth in U.S. users

The U.S. was the largest online population in the study, with 142 million users accessing social media. The average time spent on Twitter in the U.S. increased by 368% over the previous year, while the time spent on Facebook was increased by 200%.

Twitter social network remains the fastest growing in the U.S., according to figures from Nielsen-year. The microblogging service claimed to have received 18.1 million unique visitors in December, a huge 579% increase over the 2.7 million unique users with those who had the previous year. However, the numbers of unique users of the site is decreased by 5% the previous month.

The cloud of volcanic ash drifting across all Europe is continuing to make much of the continent a no-fly zone past week.

It is still unclear how long that disruption will last, but the longer flights are grounded, the greater the impact will be on businesses and the wider economy.

AIRLINES

The most direct casualty of the ash is the airline industry. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that airlines have collectively losing £130m per day in lost revenues.

Travel companies are also losing out. TUI, the owner of First Choice and Thomson and Europe’s biggest travel operator, says it is losing between £5m and £6m a day.

The Great Britain Prime Minister Gordon Brown admitted the problem was so serious that financial help for airlines would be considered.

OTHER TRANSPORT

However, other transport companies benefited as passengers look for alternatives to flying. Ferry services have benefited from the flight restrictions

Eurostar in particular has seen an incredible huge demand from passengers since the disruption began on Thursday 15th.

The company said it carried 50,000 extra passengers on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th – an increase of nearly a third – with services effectively full. Over the weekend, it began laying on extra services, with six extra trains planned for Monday.

Train services between Scotland and the south of England have also reported a great rise in passenger numbers, as are cross-channel ferry companies.

P&O ferries says its services between Spain, France, Holland and the UK was either full or close to full, with extra staff drafted in to the call centre to handle the huge volume of calls.

TOURISM

The impact on the tourism industry is expected to be relatively small, if the disruption lasts no longer than a few days.

As Howard Archer, chief UK and Europe Economist at IHS Global Insight, points out, it is currently not a peak time for tourism in Europe.

Although the tourism industry will lose money from customers unable to make the trip, stranded passengers unable to return home will also be forced to spend more money than expected – offsetting some of those losses.

That would also be bad timing for Greece in particular, as its struggling economy is heavily reliant on tourists arriving by air.

IMPORTS AND EXPORTS

International trade relies more heavily on road, rail and sea freight than it does on air freight. For example, just 1% of the UK’s trade, by volume, is carried by air.

But the disruption has caused real problems for those trading perishable goods, including food and flowers, which depend on air freight.

Exporters of perishable goods, such as flowers, are being badly affected. Food exports from Africa and the Caribbean are among those hit, with reports of Kenyan farmers being forced to dump stocks of fresh food and flowers destined for European consumers.

That scale of losses is expected to be repeated in agriculture-based economies across Africa and South America.

Supermarkets‘ supplies of some fresh produce could soon be affected, though no problems have yet been reported by UK retailers.

Meanwhile, carmaker Nissan has also announced a one-day suspension of production of three of its models in Japan because it has been unable to import parts from the Irish Republic.

OTHER BUSINESS COSTS

Businesses are also expected to lose money through cancelled meetings, stranded staff, and delays to air mail. Productivity in the UK is expected to suffer due to workers being unable to return to work, according to the Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR).

Meanwhile, major courier companies FedEx, DHL and TNT have reported delays and disruption to their services.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

In the short-term, the overall economic impact of the disruption is expected to be minimal, but a prolonged period without air transport could have a detrimental effect on European economies just as they are emerging from a damaging recession, some economists warn.

A drop of between 1% and 2% for European economies is not being ruled out.

“That would mean a lot of European countries wouldn’t get any growth this year,” said Chatham House senior economic fellow Vanessa Rossi.

“But the problem is, it is incredibly hard to predict what will happen. Even the geologists can’t tell us.”

For the first time in Latin America will study the market segment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population covering the gay, bisexual and transgendered Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, to meet their interests and styles life and consumption.

Gustavo Noguera, Director of Gnetwork360, told that “the gay community is a segment that is not yet fully exploited. For just outside references that reveal the level of consumption that we have, we know it is a fertile ground for exploitation in Latin America to launch products for a specific niche. The issue is that we have this information“.

This company, leader in Argentina in meetings and networking market for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), partnered with the international consultancy Out Now for carrying out the study in four South American countries, amounting to 250 million and an estimated gay population of 12 million people.

“We realized that there was no evidence from the Latin American market and this is an opportunity to learn more than they consume gays and lesbians“, said CEO of Out Now, Ian Johnson.

Consumption of the LGBT segment has an important weight in the economies of the world. Source of denominator “Double income, no kids“; (double income, no kids, who had meanwhile already begun to change by increasing paternity of homosexuals), gays tend to have high income and consumption level than the general heterosexual makes them an attractive target for all brands.

Noguera said that the survey will include “social issues to help organizations that can take advantage of studies like this at the regional level, such as the labor participation of lesbian visibility corporations or trans“.

The market survey will be conducted during the first half of 2010 via the Internet and community networks of gay and lesbian segment of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Relieve demographic, social, employment, level of visibility and integration into their respective societies, lifestyles, consumption and tourism, employment status and political and religious tendencies.

“Let’s see what are the characteristics of the Latin American” said Noguera.

Google Suggest analyzes the characters that we typing and offers appropriate recommendations in real time. What do you suggest we can analyze all the options that Google Suggest can provide for certain terms by way of a flow chart quite interesting.

Using data from Google to make suggetions on where you might like to go next, What Do You Suggest is an experimental and interactive environment designed to explore how we use language and search on the internet. There are two basic rules:

The words that appear first in each set of options are the words Google thinks are most likely to be what people are looking for.

The words joined by the thickest lines are ones which will produce the most results if you searched for them on Google.
